To preface, we aren’t hardcore zombie experts. We only made through four seasons of the walking dead and we have watched a lot of these movies for the first time all at the same time. Frankly, we don’t think most zombie movies are that scary but here are 15 that we like, including at least one that we think is truly terrifying.

15. Little Monsters (2019)

This is more of a spoof but damn is it fun as hell. It easily creeped its way into our favorite zombie movies of all time.

14. Pet Sematary (2019)

You know a movie is good when even the remake is on the list. I must say they did some really creative stuff with the new version of this movie. Strongly recommend.

13. Resident Evil (2002)

Honestly, it’s ok, in fact a bit disappoint — but it’s a classic zombie flick. Not really scary, more action than anything. However, it did set off a zombie craze that brought us plenty of good zombie movies.

12. #Alive (2020)

Better than expected. A new perspective. I think I like it most because I feel like it’s what I would do.

11. 28 Days Later (2002)

It has some great moments and some not so great moments. Overall, it’s a classic and it’s worth the watch. Props for some pretty creepy zombies.

10. The Girls with All the Gifts (2016)

A very unique twist on the zombie genre. Great cast and great storyline. Really excellent, though not very scary at all.

9. Quarantine (2008)

This one is scary (basically a remake of REC). It is definitely scarier and better executed than REC. It has some really chilling/creepy moments.

8. Pontypool (2008)

This is a weird one but it’s excellent. An artistic take on the zombie genre. I like the idea of a radio broadcaster perspective, though, I wish they had done more to explain their zombie new concept.

7. Dawn of the Dead (2004)

A classic, though a remake. It really brought the zombie genre back. That opening scene is incredible and terrifying.

6. I am Legend (2007)

The vampire/zombie mashup here is awesome and terrifying. However, **spoiler** the dog dies and it’s pretty fucking sad.

5.Train to Busan (2016)

Really love this idea and the execution was flawless. I will say the zombies are not as scary as others but the storyline is really powerful.

4. World War Z (2013)

I love this perspective on the zombie apocalypse. You get to see it on several fronts and if we cut out the scene where Brad Pitt blows up a plane and somehow survives, it brings a lot of credibility to the genre.

3. Night of the Living Dead (1968)

The OG. This version still holds up. What an excellent masterpiece of a film.

2. Pet Sematary (1986)

A creative and interesting take on the idea of zombies. It is definitely my favorite of the reanimated corpse versions of the zombie genre. Plus is haunting and chilling to the bone.

1. The Crazies (2010)

This is the absolute scariest zombie film. Having seen so many zombie movies- we feel that so many draw on the same tropes (mostly stolen from the Night of the Living Dead movie/series) and most have the same fast-paced action oriented scare tactics/post-apocalyptic vibe. This movie is sort of the opposite of what we expected. It has a much creepier feel to it than most zombie films and it preys on real fears. Rather than jumping right into a post-apocalyptic wasteland, it explores the actual “how did we get here” momentum, with a really unique on a classic monster.
